Aarwangen Castle
Aarwangen, Switzerland, Switzerland
Aarwangen Castle is a medieval fortress built around 1300 by the Lords of Aarwangen along the Aare River in Aarwangen, canton of Bern, Switzerland, to defend a key river crossing and toll point.
Originally featuring a prominent tower, it passed to the Grünenberg family after the Aarwangen line died out in 1350, then to the city of Bern in 1432, which rebuilt it in the 16th-17th centuries as a bailiff's residence with distinctive black bear coat-of-arms on the walls.
Damaged during the 1798 revolt, it now serves as a district court and administrative center with exhibitions on regional history and economic development.
