Alt-Wülflingen Castle
Winterthur, Switzerland, Switzerland
Alt-Wülflingen Castle is a medieval ruin on a hill above the Töss River near Winterthur-Wülflingen in Switzerland's canton of Zurich, with origins tracing back to an early medieval refuge site expanded in the mid-11th century by local nobility possibly including the von Wülflingen family.
By 1239, it belonged to the Habsburg-Kyburg counts, who built its prominent 18-meter-high bergfried tower with 2.25-meter-thick sandstone walls, later used for high justice (Blutgericht), imprisonment, and torture until the 18th century.
Passed through families like von Seen, von Rümlang, and Steiner, it declined after the Reformation, with materials reused for nearby Schloss Wülflingen in 1644; the city of Winterthur restored the tower in 1983-1984, now offering panoramic views as a heritage site.
