Ruine Wildenburg
Baar, Switzerland, Switzerland
Ruine Wildenburg is a 13th-century medieval castle ruin perched on a rocky spur above the Lorze Valley gorge in Baar, canton of Zug, Switzerland.
Built by a branch of the Lords of Hünenberg, vassals of the Kyburg and Habsburg counts, as the center of a new clearing lordship to control traffic over the Lorzentobel Bridge, it featured a stone ring wall, a massive 3.5-meter-thick round bergfried keep, and a palas hall.
After the Hünenberg knights fought against the Swiss Confederates at the 1386 Battle of Sempach, the family sold their holdings, leading to the castle's abandonment, decay, and use as a quarry by the 16th century, with modern restorations preserving its walls following 1938-1985 excavations.
