Allaman Castle
Allaman, Switzerland, Switzerland
Allaman Castle, located in the municipality of Allaman in Switzerland's Canton of Vaud, originated in the 11th or 12th century as a fortress and was substantially rebuilt in 1253 by Louis, Duke of Savoy and Count of Vaud.
Burned down by Bernese forces in 1530, it was reconstructed and later owned by philanthropist Jean-Jacques de Sellon until 1839, who hosted notable figures like Joseph Bonaparte, Joséphine de Beauharnais, Voltaire, Franz Liszt, and George Sand while founding the Society of Peace there in 1820, earning it the nickname "Castle of Peace."
Recognized as a Swiss heritage site of national significance, the vast private estate spans over 33 hectares with forests, parks, and Grand Cru vineyards, blending medieval, Gothic, and Louis XV architecture after recent restorations into a luxurious family residence that produces wine but remains closed to the public.
