Alpin Flore-Alpe Botanical Garden
Orsières, Switzerland, Switzerland
Alpin Flore-Alpe Botanical Garden (Jardin botanique alpin Flore-Alpe) is a compact alpine garden located above Champex-Lac in the commune of Orsières, in the Valais Alps of southwestern Switzerland. It sits at about 1,500 metres above sea level on steep, terraced ground overlooking the lake and surrounding peaks, creating a setting that mimics natural mountain habitats. The garden was created in the 1920s (formally established in 1927) by industrialist Jean-Marcel Aubert as a private alpine garden, and it later evolved into a recognized botanical institution and cultural site of national importance. Covering roughly 6,000 square metres, it cultivates around 4,000 species of alpine and montane plants, including flora from the Swiss Alps, other European mountain ranges and selected high-mountain regions on other continents. The collections emphasize classic alpine groups such as gentians, saxifrages, houseleeks (Sempervivum), rhododendrons, primulas and other rock and scree plants, arranged in carefully constructed rockeries, scree slopes, wetlands, peat bogs and dry grasslands. Today the garden functions both as a living museum of alpine flora and as a place for education and quiet recreation, with paths, streams and interpretive signs that help visitors understand how mountain plants are adapted to harsh climates and why alpine ecosystems are important to conserve.
