Alt-Bechburg Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Alt-Bechburg Castle is a medieval ruin perched on a rocky ridge overlooking the Augstbach Valley near Holderbank in Switzerland's canton of Solothurn.
Built around 1050 by the Barons of Bechburg as a strategic fortress guarding the Hauenstein Pass, it featured extensive curtain walls, a prominent tower, outer bailey, and gatehouse, later divided between owners including the Bishop of Basel before passing to Solothurn in 1416.
The site decayed due to maintenance costs, suffered a devastating fire in 1713, and was excavated and conserved in 1936-1937, uncovering a hoard of over 5,000 silver coins now housed in Solothurn's Blumenstein Museum, making it a Swiss heritage site of national significance accessible via hiking trails with panoramic Jura views.
