Ruine Sünikon
Steinmaur, Switzerland, Switzerland
Ruine Sünikon is a medieval castle ruin located southwest of Sünikon in the municipality of Steinmaur, in Switzerland's canton of Zurich, situated on the northern slope of the Lägern hill along an ancient pilgrimage route from the Upper Rhine to Einsiedeln Abbey.
First associated with the knightly family von Sünikon, mentioned as vassals of the Regensbergs from 1281 until their disappearance after 1397, the site features a simple square tower structure measuring about 12.5 by 11.9 meters with walls up to 1.3 meters thick, uncovered during 1961-1962 excavations.
Artifacts date mainly to the 15th-17th centuries, suggesting it later served as a pilgrim hostel near the 16th-century Maria Pflasterbach chapel rather than purely as a fortress, though its original role as the knights' residence remains debated.
