Altes Schloss Bümpliz
Bern, Switzerland, Switzerland
Altes Schloss Bümpliz is a historic castle in the Bümpliz-Oberbottigen district of Bern, Switzerland, originating from a Burgundian royal estate around 900 with a round stone tower added in the 1260s possibly under Savoy influence.
Rebuilt in the late 15th century by the Erlach family into a residential and administrative manor with a gatehouse tower, it later saw baroque adaptations before partial demolition in 1742 when the nearby Neues Schloss was constructed, leaving remnants like the north-west wing.
Over time, it functioned as a sanatorium, boys' school, rental property, and community space until acquired by Bern in 1954; a 1976 fire prompted restoration, converting it into a restaurant, archives, and offices with recreated features like a drawbridge.
