Amsoldingen Castle
Allmendingen bei Bern, Switzerland
Amsoldingen Castle, located in the municipality of Amsoldingen near Bern in Switzerland, dates back to the 10th century and served originally as the residence for the provost of the nearby collegiate church of St. Mauritius.
Built alongside the church, which has roots in a 6th- or 7th-century structure rebuilt in Ottonian style using stones from Roman Aventicum ruins, the castle and church complex holds Swiss heritage site status of national significance.
Over centuries, ownership shifted from the impoverished provostry—transferred to Bern's St. Vincent's cathedral in 1484—to merchants like the May family, engineer Samuel Bodmer who improved local flood defenses there in the early 1700s, and later nobles who rebuilt it in neo-Gothic style around 1846 with added parks.
Today, the castle stands as a historic landmark blending medieval origins with later architectural enhancements, closely tied to the enduring St. Mauritius church featuring Romanesque elements, murals, and a crypt.
