Attinghausen Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Attinghausen Castle is a ruined medieval fortress in the municipality of Attinghausen, Canton of Uri, Switzerland, with origins dating before 1100 as a hilltop motte-and-bailey structure likely built by knights serving the Counts of Zähringen.
By the 13th century, the von Schweinsberg family owned it, replacing early fortifications with an 11-by-11-meter square tower, ring wall, and stone residential building around 1300, while supporting the early Swiss Confederacy through alliances like the 1351 pact with Zurich that expanded the Confederation.
The castle saw destruction possibly from fire or conflict in 1360, leading to abandonment as owners shifted to Rudenz Castle, with ruins excavated in 1894 and restored by 2012 for public access as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
