Verified Balana Fort

Kadugannawa Balana Rd, Sri Lanka

Balana Fort, located near Kadugannawa on Balana Hill in Sri Lanka, was a key fortified outpost of the Kingdom of Kandy. Built in the late 16th century by King Vimaladharmasuriya I, the fort stood as a strategic defense point on the Colombo-Kandy route, guarding the kingdom against invading forces such as the Portuguese, Dutch, and British for nearly five centuries.

The name "Balana" means "look-out" in Sinhala, reflecting its role as a sentinel post with a commanding view over the surrounding terrain. The fort's structure included a quadrangular upper fort with circular bastions, positioned to prevent enemy retreats as part of the Kandyan defensive strategy.

Though it was occupied briefly by the Portuguese in the early 1600s, the fort played a major role in repelling invasions and preserving the independence and culture of the Kandyan Kingdom until its abandonment after British colonization in the early 19th century. Today, only the ruins remain, surrounded by dense vegetation, and the site is protected and conserved by Sri Lanka’s Department of Archaeology.
