Fort Mc'Dowall
Matale, Sri Lanka
Fort McDowall in Matale, Sri Lanka, was constructed by the British in 1803 during the Kandyan Wars and named after Major General Hay MacDowall, the British commander in Ceylon. It was one of few inland British forts and saw action in conflicts such as the Matale Rebellion of 1848, when approximately 400 rebels led by Puran Appu and Gongalegoda Banda besieged it but were repulsed.
The fort subsequently served as a military garrison where many rebels were court-martialed and executed following the rebellion. Today, only the gateway and part of the ramparts remain, with the site now used as Matale’s cemetery, including a monument commemorating the rebellion. It stands as a significant historical reminder of the British colonial period and local resistance in Sri Lanka.
