Fort Ostenburg
Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka
Fort Ostenburg is a historic coastal fortification on a high forested ridge just north of Trincomalee (Trincomalee) in Sri Lanka, overlooking the entrance to the inner harbour of the bay within the present SLN Dockyard.
The site was originally developed as a small fort by the Dutch (with some accounts also mentioning Portuguese and King Rajasinghe II influences) and was later surrendered to the British in 1795; it was once described as “the most powerfully gunned fort in Ceylon,” with strong batteries at sea level and many guns on the ridge above.
In the 1920s the British installed coastal artillery on the Ostenburg ridge, including casemated 6‑inch and 9.2‑inch guns, a fire‑control tower and underground ammunition stores, and during World War II the batteries were manned by British and Ceylon units to protect the strategically important harbour. The coastal batteries were decommissioned in 1962, and from the 1990s the Sri Lanka Navy transformed part of the site into the Hoods Tower Museum, a naval museum located in ground‑level and underground casemates, displaying weapons, equipment, captured Sea Tiger crafts and war trophies, while some coastal guns are kept in functional condition for symbolic reasons.
Today, Fort Ostenburg itself is largely abandoned as a historic military site, with little of the original fort remaining, but the ridge and museum remain accessible to visitors and provide panoramic views of the Trincomalee inner harbour and the surrounding bay.
