Basilique de Valère
Sion, Switzerland, Switzerland
Basilique de Valère is a fortified Romanesque-Gothic church on Valère hill in Sion, canton of Valais, Switzerland, first mentioned in 1049 as the residence of the cathedral chapter and constructed mainly between 1100 and 1267.
It features a historic pipe organ from around 1430-1435, one of the world's oldest playable organs, along with medieval murals, a rood screen, and 17th-century choir stalls, elevated to minor basilica status in 1987 by Pope John Paul II.
Part of a Swiss heritage site of national significance alongside Tourbillon Castle, the complex includes remnants of a medieval borough with defensive walls, now housing the Valais History Museum.
