Batticaloa Dutch Fort
Batticaloa, Sri Lanka
Batticaloa Dutch Fort, located on Puliyavanthivu Island in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, was originally built by the Portuguese in 1628 as a strategic trading and administrative center. The fort features a square structure with four bastions, protected by the Batticaloa Lagoon on two sides and a moat on the other two.
It was captured by the Dutch in 1638, who initially destroyed it but rebuilt and renovated it by 1682, adding fortified bastions and embracing a multi-layered architectural style reflecting Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences. The fort later came under British control in 1796 and served various administrative functions.
Today, it remains in good condition and houses several local administrative offices. The fort is open to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s colonial past and panoramic views of the surrounding lagoon and city. It also serves as a symbol of the region’s layered colonial history and resilience.
