Bijela Tabija
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bijela Tabija, also known as the White Fortress, is a prominent historical site located on the southeastern slopes above Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Overlooking the city at 667 meters above sea level, it was originally built on the site of a medieval fortification and later modified during the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian periods. The fortress formed a key part of the old Vratnik City defense system and offered strategic protection of the eastern entrance to Sarajevo.
Its importance spanned centuries, notably playing roles during military conflicts such as the 17th-century attacks and the Austro-Hungarian siege of 1878. Although much of the structure today consists of ruins, Bijela Tabija remains a symbol of Sarajevo’s resilience, celebrated for its panoramic views and significant cultural heritage, and is protected as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
