Bipp Castle
Oberbipp, Switzerland
Bipp Castle is a partially ruined medieval fortress in the municipality of Oberbipp, Canton of Bern, Switzerland, first documented in 1268 and likely built by the Counts of Froburg on a hill near the village.
It changed hands multiple times among nobles like the Counts of Neuchâtel-Nidau, Kyburg, Habsburgs, Basel, Solothurn, and Bern, serving as an administrative center for local reeves until the French invasion in 1798 led to its plunder and abandonment.
The site featured a polygonal layout with a massive palas, round bergfried tower, curtain walls, and outer defenses, but was partly demolished after 1805 for building materials, with a small mansion later added by the Stehlin family in 1855.
Today, the ruins stand as a historic landmark blending original medieval remnants with later additions, accessible for visitors exploring Swiss heritage.
