Birseck Castle
Arlesheim, Switzerland, Switzerland
Birseck Castle is a medieval ruin overlooking Arlesheim in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, with origins tracing back to the 12th century under the Counts of Frohburg.
Bishop Lüthold of Basel ordered its stone fortifications built around 1243-1244 as part of a defensive chain along the Birs River valley, later damaged by the 1356 earthquake and abandoned by the 18th century.
Destroyed by French revolutionary forces in 1793, its picturesque remains were integrated into the nearby English landscape garden of the Arlesheim Hermitage, now managed as a cultural site with trails and events.
