Borač Fortress
Varošište, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Borač Fortress in Varošište, Bosnia and Herzegovina, was one of the largest and most important fortified towns of medieval Bosnia.
It was situated on rugged slopes high above the Prača river canyon and served as the seat of the noble Pavlović family. The fortress is divided into two parts: the Big Town and the Small Town, with several towers and bulwarks integrated into the rocky landscape for natural defense. The original Borač Castle was built in the 13th century, around 1244, while a neighboring newer fortress known as Pavlovac or New Town dates from the late 14th century.
The fortress witnessed many historical events, including fortifications by despot Đurađ Branković and its eventual conquest and destruction by Ottoman forces in the 15th century. Presently, the remains include walls, towers, and ruins that highlight its past significance as a defensive stronghold and noble residence, set in a striking natural environment.
