Botanic Garden St. Gallen
St. Gallen, Switzerland, Switzerland
The Botanic Garden St. Gallen is a municipal botanical garden in the Stephanshorn district of St. Gallen, a little outside the city centre, where it serves both as an educational facility and a quiet green refuge for visitors. Established at its present site in 1945, it covers about 2 hectares and presents around 8,000 labelled plant species from all over the world, displayed in roughly 20 outdoor sections and several specialized houses, including a tropical house, an “Alpine House,” a carnivorous-plant house and a collection of “living stones” (Lithops). The outdoor areas are organised by themes such as geographical regions, plant uses (e.g., medicinal, poisonous and crop plants) and particular plant groups, and also include species-rich, nutrient-poor grasslands that showcase over 100 native meadow species, making the site a living classroom for botany and conservation. Open daily with free admission, the garden offers regular exhibitions, guided tours and publications, while also inviting people simply to stroll, enjoy the changing displays throughout the year and experience a peaceful, plant-rich landscape on the edge of the city.
