Burg Bärenfels
Wehr, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Switzerland
Burg Bärenfels, also known as Steinegg, is a ruined medieval hilltop castle located at 702 meters above Wehr in Baden-Württemberg's Waldshut district, Germany—not Switzerland—overlooking the Wehratal valley.
Built between 1325 and 1330 by the Vasolt family after acquiring former Klingental monastery lands, it was sold to Habsburg Austria in 1330 due to financial woes and later passed to the Bärenfels knights by 1410 amid conflicts like the Basel war.
Damaged around 1410 and abandoned, the site preserves a ring wall, prominent bergfried tower serving as a viewpoint, and Vorburg remnants, restored since the 1860s by local groups for public hiking access with panoramic vistas.
