Burg Landenberg
Sarnen, Switzerland
Burg Landenberg is a ruined medieval castle on a hilltop in the municipality of Sarnen, canton of Obwalden, Switzerland, with fortifications dating back to the early 11th century when the Counts of Lenzburg built a wooden fort there.
Inherited by the Habsburgs after 1173, they constructed a large stone ring wall around the hill, making it one of central Switzerland's biggest castles, though it was abandoned by the early 13th century for unknown reasons.
Later adapted with a 1711 Baroque armory, a 1752 shooting range, and serving as the Obwalden cantonal assembly site from 1646 until 1998, the preserved walls and structures now form a heritage site of national significance used for events amid scenic views.
