Burg Löwenburg (Löhnburg)
Pleigne, Switzerland, Switzerland
Burg Löwenburg, also known as Löhnburg Castle ruins, is a medieval fortress remnant situated on a hillock near the fortified priory of Löwenburg in the municipality of Pleigne, Canton of Jura, Switzerland.
Dating back to the 10th or 14th century, it originally served as a defensive site before passing to the Cistercian Lucelle Abbey in Alsace, with its estate evolving into a priory complex built between 1585 and 1597 under Abbot Beatus Papa, featuring a gateway tower and agricultural buildings.
Recognized as a Swiss heritage site of national significance alongside Paleolithic and Neolithic flint mines, the ruins overlook the River Lützel and are part of a restored farm estate managed by the Christoph Merian Foundation since 1956.
