Burg Neuburg
Untervaz, Switzerland, Switzerland
Burg Neuburg is a well-preserved medieval castle ruin perched on a steep rocky spur above the Rhine Valley in the municipality of Untervaz near Chur, in Switzerland's canton of Graubünden.
Built around 1300 by the Tumb von Neuburg family from Vorarlberg, first documented in 1345 as Nüwburg, it features a massive rectangular keep measuring 12 by 29 meters with 1.5-meter-thick walls, a ring wall, cistern, and elevated entrance, serving as a fortified residence amid regional feuds.
Passing through families like Buwix, Rhäzüns, Rappenstein or Mötteli, and sold to the Bishop of Chur in 1496, it was abandoned in the 16th century, later acquired by Untervaz municipality in 1577, and now stands as a Class A Swiss cultural property of national significance with medieval carvings and hiking access.
