Burgruine Alt Homberg
Wittnau, Switzerland, Switzerland
Burgruine Alt Homberg is a medieval castle ruin situated on a triangular hilltop north of Wittnau in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland, constructed around 1100 by the Counts of Homberg.
Serving as the ancestral seat for these local nobles, it overlooked the Fricktal valley and endured until damaged in the devastating 1356 Basel earthquake, after which it gradually fell into decay amid shifting regional powers. Today, scant wall remnants persist amid scenic hiking trails in the Jurapark Aargau, drawing visitors for panoramic views rather than extensive architecture.
