Burgruine
Hospental, Switzerland, Switzerland
Burgruine in Hospental, also known as Hospental Castle or the Langobarden Towers, is a ruined medieval tower in the canton of Uri, Switzerland, built in the 13th century from uncut stones by the Hospental family primarily as a watchtower and prison overlooking the strategic Urserntal valley near the Gotthard Pass.
The structure features a tall first-floor entrance, visible garderobes, fireplaces, and a protective ditch, with rainwater collected from its crenellated roof into a cistern, though it fell into disuse by the 15th century and was restored in 1898.
Designated a Swiss heritage site of national significance, the ruins dominate the village skyline and offer panoramic views, symbolizing the area's importance for medieval travel and defense.
