Burgruine Hohensax
Sennwald, Switzerland
Burgruine Hohensax is a ruined medieval castle overlooking Sennwald in Canton St. Gallen, Switzerland, constructed around 1200 by the barons of Sax as a strategic hilltop fortress.
It passed to Ulrich von Sax in 1248, founding the Sax-Hohensax line, endured plundering in 1393, and was sold to Austrian dukes before Appenzell forces captured and destroyed it in 1446 during the Old Zürich War.
The barons then moved to nearby Forstegg Castle, and by 1640 the ruins integrated into the Sax-Forstegg barony, preserving remnants of its feudal significance amid panoramic Alpine views accessible by hiking trails.
