Burgruine Marmels
Surses, Switzerland, Switzerland
Burgruine Marmels is a dramatic medieval castle ruin built into a natural cave high above the Lai da Marmorera reservoir in the municipality of Marmorera within Surses, canton of Graubünden, Switzerland.
Dating to around 1100 with a Carolingian-era chapel, it served as the seat of the von Marmels family, vassals of the Bishop of Chur, who expanded their influence through captures like the 1193 imprisonment of Cardinal Legate Cintius and holdings in nearby castles until the line's prominence faded by the 16th century.
Abandoned after 1550 and damaged by a 1905 earthquake, the "Grottenburg" features a rocky overhang as its roof, steep access paths, and remnants of towers and walls, now a protected heritage site reachable by challenging hikes offering Alpine vistas.
