Burgruine Splügen
Switzerland, Switzerland
Burgruine Splügen, or Splügen Castle ruins, is a medieval fortress remnant located east of the village of Splügen in the Rheinwald valley of Graubünden canton, Switzerland, perched on a terrace above the Hinterrhein river.
Constructed around 1275 by the Freiherren von Splügen to control the vital Splügen Pass trade route, it includes a fortified palace with a kennel-like forecourt and defensive features typical of high-alpine castles.
Abandoned after the 14th century, the well-preserved ruins are now a Swiss heritage site reachable by a short 10-minute hike, offering hikers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
