Burgruine Unspunnen
Wilderswil, Switzerland, Switzerland
Burgruine Unspunnen is a medieval castle ruin perched on a rocky spur above the village of Wilderswil near Interlaken in Switzerland's canton of Bern.
Dating to the early 13th century and possibly originating as a 12th-century round tower, it served as a strategic stronghold owned by noble families like those of Thun, Eschenbach, and Weissenburg before falling under Bernese control after conflicts including the 1334 siege and 1386 Battle of Sempach.
Allowed to decay after 1533, the site gained fame as the backdrop for the first Unspunnenfest in 1805, a traditional Swiss festival, and now preserves a central round tower, ring walls, and residential remnants with panoramic views of the Jungfrau massif, accessible via hiking paths.
