Burgruine Waldhusen
Switzerland, Switzerland
Burgruine Waldhausen, also known as Ruine Waldhausen, is a medieval cave castle ruin situated in the Bachsertal valley on the western slope of Sanzenberg in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland.
Dating likely to the late Middle Ages, this unique rock shelter fortress, up to 12 meters deep, was once walled with a 1.8-meter-thick barrier of boulder stones and featured beam supports and a possible guard post on a southern outcrop.
Legends link it to knight Adalbert von Waldhausen hiding his children there, with excavations from 1840 to 1878 uncovering decorated tiles, soot-blackened blocks from a vault, and evidence of fire damage, accessible today via a steep hiking trail.
