Founded in the early 13th century by the Counts of Rapperswil, it later passed to the Lords of Hinwil and was destroyed by the Swiss in 1444.

Designated as a Swiss heritage site of national significance, the ruins offer insights into medieval fortifications amid scenic surroundings.
