Burgturm Spaniola
Pontresina, Switzerland, Switzerland
Burgturm Spaniola, also known as Spaniola Tower or Spaniola Castle, is a medieval five-sided bergfried tower located on a hill above the village of Pontresina in the Engadin valley of Graubünden, Switzerland.
Built around 1200 as the seat of the powerful lords of Pontresina, it featured defensive elements like a high elevated entrance, narrow slits for archery, and an adapted pentagonal design to protect against rockslides and avalanches.
Abandoned by the 15th century and noted as a ruin by 1550, it underwent preservation work in 1934 and 1994, and stands today as a well-preserved Swiss heritage site accessible via hiking paths.
