ÇANDIR KALESİ
Turkey, Turkey
Çandır Kalesi, known historically as Paperon or Baberon, is a medieval Armenian fortress in the Toroslar district of Mersin Province, Turkey, strategically positioned at 1,450 meters elevation on mountain routes linking Central Anatolia to Mediterranean ports.
Built during the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia in the 12th-14th centuries under the Het'umid dynasty, it controlled key trade paths with walls, a church inscribed in 1251 by Sempad the Constable, and a two-story residence, later passing to Seljuks, Karamanids, and Ottomans.
Accessible via 140 vaulted steps, the ruins blend Byzantine, Armenian, and Islamic architecture amid Taurus Mountains scenery.
