Harran Kalesi
Harran, Türkiye, Turkey
Harran Kalesi is a ruined medieval citadel in the ancient town of Harran, Şanlıurfa Province, southeastern Turkey, southeast of the city center and linked to its old walls.
Likely originating in Byzantine times from the 4th-7th centuries AD, possibly over a pre-Islamic Sabian moon temple, it was expanded under Islamic rule in the 9th century and significantly rebuilt by the Ayyubids around 1200, featuring an irregular rectangular layout of 90x130 meters with dodecagonal corner towers and three stories originally housing 150 rooms.
Used as a palace then fortress amid regional conflicts, it saw restorations under Fatimids and Ayyubids before declining in Ottoman times, with recent excavations and partial reconstructions making parts accessible to visitors.
