Rumkale, perched dramatically on sheer cliffs at the Euphrates River's confluence with the Sajur in Gaziantep Province, Turkey, boasts origins possibly in Assyrian times around 855 BC as Shitamrat, evolving into a Byzantine fortress by the 6th century serving as a Syriac Orthodox bishopric.

From 1148 to 1292, it became the Armenian Apostolic Church's headquarters under Catholicos Grigor III, a hub for illuminated manuscripts by masters like Toros Roslin, before Mamluk conquest amid Crusader-Mongol conflicts, later transitioning to Ottoman control in 1516 with added mosques and madrasas.

Featuring massive limestone walls, seven bastions, cisterns, rock-cut defenses, churches, and a deep moat, these layered ruins now form a peninsula amid a reservoir, preserving millennia of multicultural strategic heritage overlooking scenic waters.
