Zilkale is a striking medieval castle perched at 1,130 meters on a cliff edge in the Fırtına Valley of Rize Province, Turkey's Black Sea region, overlooking the rushing Fırtına River 380 meters below.
Built between the 14th and 15th centuries, likely for defensive purposes along ancient caravan routes, it features three layered walls - outer, middle, and inner with garrison quarters, a possible chapel, and a head tower adapted to the rugged Pontic Mountains. Once a key stronghold in the area ruled by local principalities and later the Ottomans, it now draws visitors for its dramatic location amid lush forests and scenic hikes.
