Cape Coast Castle in Ghana is a large, well-preserved fort originally built by the Swedes in 1653 and later expanded by the British. It was initially a trading post for gold and timber but became a central hub of the Atlantic slave trade, with underground dungeons holding up to 1,500 enslaved Africans awaiting shipment to the Americas.

The castle was often called the "gate of no return" as it was one of the last stops before the transatlantic journey. Over time, Cape Coast Castle changed hands among various European powers, including the Danes, Dutch, and British, who fortified and expanded it.

Today, the castle stands as a museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, serving as a solemn reminder of the brutality of the slave trade and its impact on African history and culture.
