Castel Grande
Bellinzona, Switzerland, Switzerland
Castel Grande is the largest and oldest of Bellinzona's three UNESCO World Heritage castles in Ticino, Switzerland, perched on a rocky hill with origins tracing back to Neolithic settlements around 5500-5000 BC and a Roman fort from the late 1st century BC under Emperor Augustus.
Expanded in the 4th century AD, fortified by Lombards and Franks from the 6th-8th centuries, and serving as a bishop's residence in the Middle Ages, it was massively rebuilt in the 13th-15th centuries by Milanese dukes like the Visconti and Sforza, who added towering walls, the 28-meter Black Tower, and connected it to city ramparts for defense against Alpine invaders.
After Swiss control from 1500, it functioned as a garrison and prison before restorations in the 20th century transformed it into a museum showcasing archaeological finds and Ticino history, offering panoramic valley views as a symbol of medieval military architecture.
