Castello di Mesocco
Mesocco, Switzerland, Switzerland
Castello di Mesocco is a vast ruined medieval fortress crowning a hill above the village of Mesocco in Switzerland's canton of Graubünden.
Originating from a 7th-century fortified church expanded into a full castle by the 12th century, it served as the seat of the powerful von Sax family until 1480, then passed to the Milanese Trivulzio family who fortified it further amid regional conflicts.
Abandoned in 1526 by order of the Three Leagues and damaged over time, the extensive pentagonal walls, towers, and inner structures were restored in the 20th century, now forming one of the largest castle complexes in the canton and a protected heritage site with panoramic valley views.
