Castello Visconteo - Museo Civico e Archeologico
Locarno, Switzerland, Switzerland
Castello Visconteo in Locarno, Switzerland, is a medieval fortress dating back to the late 12th or early 13th century, originally serving as a residence for local nobles like the Orelli family before being captured by the Visconti of Milan in 1342, who fortified it with massive walls and turned it into a strategic stronghold overlooking Lake Maggiore.
Expanded under the Rusca family in the 15th century into a Renaissance-style palace with ornate halls, arcades, and swallowtail merlons, it featured a possible Leonardo da Vinci-designed rivellino bastion added in 1507 during conflicts with Swiss forces, though much was demolished in 1531-1532 after Swiss control due to high maintenance costs.
Today, as a Swiss heritage site of national significance, the restored structure houses the Civic and Archaeological Museum with over 10,000 artifacts including Roman glass, Celtic helmets, medieval weapons, and frescoed rooms, offering insights into Locarno's history from prehistoric times through the Renaissance.
