Castelmur Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Castelmur Castle is a medieval ruin dramatically perched on a rocky ridge above the village of Bondo in the Bregaglia Valley of Graubünden canton, eastern Switzerland, with constructions spanning from the high Middle Ages.
Originally a strategic fortress blocking the valley route near a Roman-era settlement, it featured a square tower, thick defensive walls, a gatehouse, and an adjacent early church (Nossa Donna), controlled by the Bishops of Chur from around 960 and later by local vassals who took the Castelmur name.
Abandoned by the 16th century after losing military importance, the impressive remnants were excavated in the 1920s, revealing Roman artifacts, and now serve as a Swiss heritage site accessible to hikers for its panoramic alpine views.
