Castle Gestelnburg
Niedergesteln, Switzerland, Switzerland
Castle Gestelnburg is a medieval castle ruin dramatically perched on a rocky spur above the village of Niedergesteln in the canton of Valais, Switzerland.
Built in stages from the 12th century by the powerful Barons de la Tour (Herrn vom Turn), it featured a round tower, massive 40x13-meter palas residence, ramparts, cistern, and three defensive terraces, serving as their influential stronghold during Valais' feudal power struggles.
Destroyed in 1384 amid conflicts between local lords, Savoy, and Sion bishops, the site was excavated and conserved in the 1980s-1990s, now recognized as a Swiss heritage site of national significance with a "Ritterweg" trail highlighting its history amid stunning Rhone Valley views.
