Castle Neu Bechburg
Oensingen, Switzerland, Switzerland
Castle Neu Bechburg is a well-preserved medieval spur castle located near Oensingen in Switzerland's canton of Solothurn, constructed around 1250 by the Barons of Bechburg as a fortified residence on a narrow rocky ridge.
It changed hands multiple times among noble families including the Counts of Frohburg, Nidau, Thierstein, Kyburg, and Buchegg, before being sold to Bern and Solothurn in 1415, later serving as a bailiff's seat, bishop's residence in 1635, poorhouse, inn, and even a stone quarry until restoration began in 1880 by the Riggenbach family.
Recognized as a Swiss heritage site of national significance, the castle features a nearly 30-meter-tall round bergfried tower, knight's hall, palas, and terrace, now maintained by a foundation for public visits amid scenic Jura landscapes.
