Castle Worth
Neuhausen am Rheinfall, Switzerland, Switzerland
Castle Worth, known as Wörth Castle or Schlössli Wörth, is a historic water castle on a small island in the Rhine River at Neuhausen am Rheinfall in Switzerland's canton of Schaffhausen, right by Europe's largest waterfall.
First mentioned in the 13th century with roots to an 11th-century fort, it acted as a customs house and transshipment point for goods bypassing the falls on the vital trade route from Lake Constance to Basel, owned by Habsburg vassals and later the Allerheiligen Abbey.
Rebuilt in 1348, it lost trade importance with the railroad's arrival, was converted to a restaurant in 1837, and now welcomes visitors with dining, shops, and boat tours offering stunning Rhine Falls views.
