Cesme Castle
Çeşme, Türkiye, Turkey
Çeşme Castle, situated in the coastal town of Çeşme in İzmir Province, Turkey, was constructed in 1508 under Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II to defend against Venetian naval threats and pirate raids following attacks in 1472 and 1501.
Featuring a rectangular layout with thick stone walls, four towers, an inner citadel, mosque, and water cisterns, it exemplifies Ottoman military architecture and now stands slightly inland due to sediment buildup.
The well-preserved fortress houses the Çeşme Archaeology Museum, displaying artifacts from nearby ancient sites like Ildırı, and gained Tentative World Heritage status in 2020.
