Château d'Illens
Rossens, Gibloux, Switzerland, Switzerland
Château d'Illens is a medieval castle ruin located in the municipality of Rossens within the Gibloux region of the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland.
First documented between 1150 and 1276, it served as a strategic fortress for the Seigneurie d'Illens and passed through various noble hands, including the counts of Neuchâtel, Savoyards, and Gruyère before being conquered by Fribourg and Bern in 1324.
In the 15th century, Guillaume de la Baume significantly expanded it into an elegant residence, but it fell into ruin after being seized in 1475 during conflicts with the Swiss Confederates, and today it stands as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
