Château de Bulle
Bulle, Switzerland, Switzerland
Château de Bulle is a medieval fortress in the town of Bulle in Switzerland's Canton of Fribourg, constructed from 1291 to 1331 by the Bishop of Lausanne as a defense against regional rivals like the Counts of Gruyères and Savoy.
Featuring a classic Savoyard square layout with a 33-meter main tower, corner turrets, and surrounding moat once filled by a local canal, it served as an administrative hub with courts, tax collection, and later as a bailiff's residence after Fribourg's 1537 annexation.
Spared from major fires and renovated in the 18th century, it remains a heritage site of national importance, housing district offices, a prefecture, and prisons while preserving its robust medieval silhouette.
