Château de Gruyères
Gruyères, Switzerland, Switzerland
Château de Gruyères is a medieval fortress perched on a hilltop in the charming town of Gruyères in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland.
Built between 1270 and 1282 in the Savoyard square plan style, it served as the seat of the powerful Counts of Gruyères until the last count's bankruptcy in 1554, after which it became the residence of Fribourg's bailiffs and prefects until 1848.
Later acquired by the Bovy and Balland families, who turned it into an artists' colony, the castle was repurchased by the canton in 1938 and opened as a museum showcasing eight centuries of history, art, armor, tapestries, and regional legends.
