Originally serving as the fortified residence for Sion's prince-bishops after its purchase by Bishop Guichard Tavelli in 1373, it hosted political gatherings and receptions until fires in 1529 and 1788 led to its decline, with bishops relocating nearby.
Today, this Swiss heritage site of national significance houses the Valais Museum of Fine Arts since 1947, featuring regional art collections amid its terraced walls and towers.
